St. Francis High School was established in 1930 during the presidency of Edward J. Barclay. Its first building, a modest thatched roof structure, was located opposite what is now Kai’s store in the center of Pleebo. The school initially served as an elementary school, with the late Dominic Wallace serving as its first headmaster from its founding until 1967.
In 1960, the late Sr. John Joseph joined the staff, marking the beginning of a significant period of growth. As the student population expanded and advanced academically, the need for a junior high school became apparent. This led to an administrative division in 1968: Dominic Wallace continued to oversee the elementary school, while Sr. John Joseph took charge of the junior high section. By 1973, St. Francis had grown into a full high school.
In 1974, Sr. John Joseph was succeeded by the late Fr. Dortue Seckey, who later became the Bishop of the Diocese of Gbarnga. Following Dominic Wallace's tenure, Mr. Victor N. B. Walker, the former Superintendent of Maryland County, assumed the role of principal for the elementary school.
From 1975 to 1976, the late Bishop Dortue Seckey, then a priest, led the high school. He was followed by the late Joseph Nimely, who served as principal from 1977 to 1978. Early in 1978, Sr. Frances Deseil took over and led the school until 1982. In the same year, Mr. Francis N. Doe succeeded Sr. Frances and served for one year. In 1983, Mr. Dioh Harris, former Chief Education Officer for Maryland County, became principal and served until 1985.
In 1985, the Marist Brothers, led by Bro. Leo Shae assumed management of the school. They managed the school until 1994 when they left due to the civil crisis in the country. During this interim period, Bro. David Konneh managed the school from 1992 to 1994. After the Marist Brothers departed, the late Samuel Gkyeyeh, a Ghanaian, acted as principal temporarily.
In 1994, Fr. Patrick Weah took over as principal and served until 1998. He was succeeded by Mr. Jackson Weah, who governed the school from 1999 to 2002. Following him, Mr. Stantley N. Browne served as principal during the 2002-2003 academic year.
In 2007, Sr. Theresa B. Topor, an alumni of the school, became principal and served until 2013. During her tenure, she oversaw significant developments at the school. After a study leave, Mrs. Regina Klo Topor returned to resume her role as principal in 2013 and continues to serve in that capacity.
