The Diocese of Cape Palmas in Liberia was formally established on December 2, 1981. This establishment marked its elevation from the Prefecture Apostolic of Cape Palmas, which had been created on March 2, 1968. The Diocese covers the entire southeastern region of Liberia, covering an expansive area of 14,000 square miles. It serves the five counties of Maryland, Sinoe, Grand Kru, Grand Gedeh, and River Gee. The Diocese is committed to the spiritual and educational growth of its residents, fostering a holistic approach to development through various programs and initiatives.
The first bishop of the Diocese was Boniface Nyema Dalieh. Appointed on January 17, 1981, he was consecrated later that year on August 24. Bishop Dalieh laid the foundation for the Diocese’s mission, focusing on both spiritual guidance and educational development.
Currently, the Diocese is under the leadership of Bishop Andrew Jagaye Karnley, who has served since 2011. Bishop Karnley continues to build upon the legacy of his predecessors, with a strong commitment to fostering spiritual growth and enhancing educational opportunities within the Diocese.
Under Bishop Karnley’s guidance, the Diocese remains dedicated to its mission of empowering individuals through knowledge and moral discipline. This commitment ensures that the Diocese remains a beacon of hope and development for the southeastern part of Liberia.
The Catholic Education Secretariat (CES) operates under the Diocese of Cape Palmas, overseeing fifteen (15) diocesan schools across the five counties. CES is responsible for coordinating, supervising, and organizing these educational institutions to ensure they deliver high-quality education in alignment with the Diocese’s mission. These schools have significantly increased access to education in remote and underserved areas, where alternatives might be limited or non-existent. This has played a crucial role in improving literacy rates and educational attainment across the region.
Personnel: CES employs a dedicated team of 312 individuals, consisting of 215 males and 97 females, who contribute to the effective functioning of the schools.
Student Population: For the academic year 2023/2024, CES schools serve a total of 4,483 students, with 2,122 boys and 2,361 girls. These students rely on their school fees to sustain their academic and operational activities throughout the year.
